Enjoy the 21st Century Misery

The entrance is at the exit

Berlin, the new German capital, seems to be designed for problems. This is why young artists have systematically been leaving Karlsruhe since the late 1990s. Berlin is the European model for a city for the penniless, a city that welcomes the procession of artists in transit. In the process of creation of added value, it serves as a quality mark. But there are still questions to be answered. Where is the music playing? Where will the Love Parade be and who will be there? What’s the maximum room for manoeuvre? The cheapest part-time studio? The big city artists themselves make a big noise. What counts above all is the culture of deviation – deviation from a “fixed state” culture – and the mobilisation of invention and forms of all kinds. “We work with inorganic objects, which are works of art, as if they were an organic part of human biology, and even more amazingly, we succeed.” (Asger Jorn)
