Gisèle Freund (1908–2000), a French-German photographer, sociologist and writer, bore witness to the figures and events of the century she lived through. She fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and settled in Paris, where she became one of the pioneers of colour portraiture for artists and writers. One of the few female photojournalists to join Magnum at the time of its creation, she was both a practitioner and a thinker of photography.
The iconic portrait of André Malraux and the photographs of Frida Kahlo in Mexico are hers. But Gisèle Freund cannot be reduced to these images alone.
Drawing on her archives, now preserved at the Institut Mémoires de l’Édition Contemporaine, the camera of the woman who was once her friend explores her unpublished photographs, contact sheets, documentary reports and writings. An intimate portrait then emerges of a remarkable and daring woman.
